CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team came away with a 101-62 win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Caltech on Wednesday night at Caltech.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 13-3 overall and 6-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led senior Micah Elan and first-year Brendan Mora who each shared a game-high 19 points in the win. Sophomore Matthew Eberle came off of the bench for 18 points shooting a perfect 4-4 from three and junior Alex Preston and senior James Kelbert each chipped in with 11 points.
The Sagehens had a night shooting the basketball with 62.3% from the field and a season-high 62.5% from three hitting on 10 of their 16 attempts. The Sagehens outrebounded the Beavers 40-18 with 23 points off of turnovers and outscored Caltech in the paint 44-28.
Pomona-Pitzer got going early and often in a game which they never trailed throughout the 40 minutes of action. The Beavers stuck with the Sagehens early on with Pomona-Pitzer clinging to a 20-15 lead with just under 13 minutes to play in the first half. Pomona-Pitzer ended the second part of the first half outscoring Caltech 28-17 and headed into the locker room with a 48-32-point lead. Mora and Elan led the Sagehens at halftime with 11 points each.
Pomona-Pitzer picked up where they left off in the second half as they quickly pushed their lead to over 20 points within the first five minutes of the second half after an Elan three pushed the lead to 60-38.
The Sagehens continued to increase their lead over the Beavers as they took a 30-point lead after a Kelbert layup at 75-45 with 8:29 left to play. Pomona-Pitzer ended up taking its largest lead of the night with 1:22 left to play at 39 points after an Eberle layup as the Sagehens cruised to a win in their fourth 100-point game of the season.
