REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team fell short in their opening Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game to Redlands 38-17 on Saturday night at Ted Runner Stadium.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 2-2 on the year and open up SCIAC play 0-1.
Senior Karter Odermann finished the day 25-48 with 262 yards passing with two total touchdowns and three interceptions. First-year Cole Barry led the rushing attack with 21 yards off of six carries while junior Win Hunter went over the 100-yard mark with 108 yards receiving and one touchdown off of six catches. Senior Jack Storrs led the defense with 12 total tackles while the Sagehen defense came away with two sacks on the night from junior Kyle Davis and half sacks from junior Adam Webber and sophomore Nicholas DelBiaggio.
Redlands amassed over 500 yards of total offense against the Sagehens as they netted320 passing yards and 188 yards on the ground.
The Sagehens opened up the game with a good-looking drive as they moved the ball into Redlands territory, but Odermann was picked off and set up the first scoring drive of the night for the Bulldogs as they went six plays and punched in an 11-yard pass to take a 7-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer answered with points on their next drive as senior Winston Li hit a 36-yard field goal while the Bulldogs followed with a field goal of their own to cap off a 12-play drive to end the first quarter with a 10-3 lead.
Each team put up a score in the second quarter but points were hard to come by as the two teams combined for five punts in the second quarter alone. The Sagehens opened up the quarter with a scoring drive as they went 75 yards in 11 plays and Odermann punched in a one-yard score to tie the game at 10-10 with 12 minutes left before halftime. Redlands was able to get a score in before halftime after a 14-yard pass gave the Bulldogs a 17-10 lead heading into the locker rooms.
Pomona-Pitzer came out of halftime and forced Redlands into a three and out on their opening drive of the second half but an interception on the first play of the drive for the Sagehens set up the Bulldogs for the first touchdown of the third quarter. Redlands followed up with a nine-play drive and a four-yard scamper by the quarterback into the endzone extended the Redlands' lead to 24-10.
After going up by two scores, the Sagehens went three and out on their next drive and the Bulldogs struck again in just three plays off of a 34-yard pass to push the lead to 31-10. The Bulldogs added another touchdown on their next drive to push the lead to their largest of the night at 38-10 with just nine minutes remaining.
Pomona-Pitzer hit for a big touchdown pass late in the game as Odermann found Hunter for 43 yards to cut the deficit down to 38-17 but the Sagehens ran out of time for a comeback as they fell to the Bulldogs on their SCIAC opener.
