Baseball: Sagehens End Opening Weekend With 6-5 Win Over Willamette

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team ended their opening weekend with a 6-5 win over non-conference opponent Willamette on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 2-2 overall.

The Sagehens were led by sophomore Kevin Lo who went 3-4 with two RBI and one run scored.

Senior Tyler Yoshihara got the start for the Sagehens and went 5.1 innings and gave up three runs and tallied four strike outs. Junior Seth Stone came in for the Sagehens in the middle of the fifth and went 2.2 innings allowing two runs and senior Trevor Walker came in and struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save.

The Bearcats struck first in their first at-bats off of an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.  The Sagehens responded with a few runs in the bottom half of the inning after junior Jake Patterson-Kohout brought home two runners with a single to centerfield to take a 2-1 lead. The Sagehens added two more on a double down the line by senior Nolan McCafferty to extend the lead to 4-1

The Bearcats got one back in the second off of a deep RBI double to cut the lead down to 4-2 and then came back to get another run in the top of the sixth off of a throwing error by the Sagehens, but a nice play at home by Stone prevented another run from scoring on a squeeze play to keep the Sagehen lead at 4-3.

The Sagehens responded in the bottom of the sixth as Lo banked a double off of the right field wall that allowed senior Jack Hanley and sophomore Jack Dameliio to score to push the lead to 6-3.

Willamette had some late offense as they struck for two runs in the top of the eighth with a two-run homer to centerfield to cut the lead down to just one run at 6-5, but Walker shut down the Bearcats in the ninth and sealed the win for the Sagehens.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next host Caltech on Friday, February 21st at 2:30 p.m.
