CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team split in their double header against non-conference opponent Whitworth with a 12-10 loss and a 5-3 win on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens move to 1-2 on the year.
Pomona-Pitzer 10, Whitworth 12
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Kevin Lo who went 4-5 in the game with three RBI and two runs scored.
The Sagehens fell behind early on in the first inning after an error on a throw by the Sagehen defense allowed the first run to score and then the Pirates followed up with an RBI single to plate the second run to take a 2-0 lead. The Pirates went on to score one in the second and one in the third to push the lead to 4-0.
After failing to score a run in the fourth, the Pirates plated two with one swing off of a two-run homer to push their lead to 6-0.
The Sagehen bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth as they plated five runs in the inning. The Sagehens struck first off of an RBI single by senior Nolan McCafferty and then a two-RBI double by Lo to cut the deficit down to 6-3. The Sagehens added two more in the inning after an RBI single by sophomroe Jack Damelio and then an error by the Pirates gave the Sagehens the fifth run of the inning to cut the lead down to 6-5.
The Pirates responded with three runs in the seventh to widen the gap over Pomona-Pitzer to 9-5. The Sagehens came all the back in the seventh to tie the game at 9-9 after a three-run bomb by senior Jack Hanley and an RBI single by Damelio.
Whitworth reclaimed the lead in the eighth but the Sagehens tied it once again in the bottom half off of an RBI single by Lo to tie it up at 10-10. The deciding runs came in the ninth as the Pirates plated the final two runs of the game and came away with the game one win.
Pomona-Pitzer 5, Whitworth 3
The Sagehens had four players with two-hit performances in Damelio, Jake Patterson-Kohout, Lo and Kyle Freeman. Joe Williams got the start in game two and went five innings with three runs scored and five strikeouts. First-year Harry Deliyannis came in relief and picked up the win with four innings pitched and didn't surrender a run with three strikeouts as well.
Whitworth went on to take the first runs of the game in the top of the fourth off of an RBI single. The Pirates tacked on two more in the inning after another single to left field to grab a 3-0 lead in the fourth.
The Sagehens cut into the lead in the bottom half of the inning as McCafferty doubled to bring in Patterson-Kohout and then added another run in the bottom of the fifth as Patterson-Kohout singled through the right side to bring home first-year Tristan Latham to cut the deficit to one run at 3-2.
The Sagehens kept the bats rolling in the bottom of the sixth as they plated the tying run off of an RBI single by Damelio and then the go-ahead run off of an RBI sac fly by junior Seth Stone to take a 4-3 lead after six innings of play.
Pomona-Pitzer added one more in the bottom of the eighth after a towering home run by Freeman extended the lead to 5-3 as the Sagehens closed out Whitworth and hung on for a win in game two.
