CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team fell to non-conference opponent Whitworth 3-1 on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens open up the year 0-1.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Ryan Nishi who notched the only RBI for the Sagehens with a solo home run in the loss. Junior Seth Stone had the only multi-hit performance for the Sagehens as he went 2-4 in the loss.
Junior Ryan Long got the start for the Sagehens on opening day and had a very nice outing with six complete innings and one run allowed off of three hits. Senior Luka Green relieved Long in the top of the seventh and gave up two runs for the Sagehens, only one of them earned, and picked up the loss.
The Sagehens fell behind in the top of the fourth as the first run of the game came on an opposite field solo homer to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer responded in the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot of their own as Nishi hit his first career homerun to tie the game at 1-1.
The Pirates reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh off of an RBI double and then added another in the eighth after an error by the Sagehen defense allowed a run to score to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Sagehens had trouble getting runners on base late in the game and failed to come up with a game tying opportunity as they dropped game one of 2020 to the Pirates.
Up Next: The Sagehens will host the Pirates again for a double header on Saturday, February 8th at 11:00 a.m.
