CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team defeated non-conference opponent Centenary 7-4 on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 7-2 overall.
The Sagehens were led by junior Jeremy Jess who went 2-5 in the win with three RBI. Junior Brian Knapp also had two hits with a 2-5 performance and one run scored. Junior Tyler Yoshihara got the start for the Sagehens on the mound as he went six innings and gave up three runs with five strikeouts for his third win of the season. Junior Ethan Baer came on in relief and pitched three innings while only surrendering one run off of four hits.
The Gents got out to an early lead as they plated a run in their first at-bats with a sacrifice fly to get out to a 1-0 advantage. Pomona-Pitzer quickly erased their slight deficit and brought home three runs in the bottom of the second after a bases clearing double by freshman Jack Damelio put the Sagehens up 3-1.
Pomona-Pitzer added one more to its lead in their next at-bats as sophomore Jacob Patterson-Kohout singled home junior Jeremy Jess to extend the lead to 4-1.
Centenary began to chip away at the lead with one run in the fourth and one in the fifth to cut the lead down to just one run for the Sagehens at 4-3.
Yoshihara got himself into a jam in the top of the sixth after walking back-to-back batters to load the bases, but pitch out of it as he got a groundout to his shortstop to keep the 4-3 lead and close out his outing.
Pomona-Pitzer broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth with another bases clearing double this time by Jess to put three more on board to push the lead to 7-3.
The Gents made it interesting with a few base hits in the ninth and scored one more to cut the lead down to 7-4 but Baer and the Sagehens held on for the win.
