CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team began 2017 with a 6-0 win in their home opener against non-conference opponent Puget Sound on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Senior David Gerics got the ball for game one and put on a show in his first outing. The senior ace went eight scoreless innings, only surrendered four hits and struck out 12 batters. The Sagehens struck again in the sixth after a lead off hit by Knapp allowed McCafferty to drive in Knapp on a single up the middle as Knapp was waved around third and avoided the tag to give the Sagehens a 3-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer tacked on two more in the inning as junior Adam Hinthorne followed that up with a single to right field to bring home McCafferty and Hinthorne then scored after a throwing error by the Loggers' shortstop to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Sagehens added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth after freshman Ezra Steinberg hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score McCafferty as the Sagehens impressed in their home opener against Puget Sound.
