CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team started off Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a big 12-3 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Pomona-Pitzer was led by junior Tanner Nishioka who went 3-5 with two RBI's and a run scored.
Junior David Gerics got the start for the Sagehens in their first game back from Texas as he went seven innings and gave up three runs on six hits and struck out eight batters.
CMS struck first in the bottom of the second inning as Chase Eller hit an RBI double to left center. Eller was thrown out at third on a good relay by the Sagehen defense but the Stags took an early 1-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer took over the lead in the next inning as senior Simon Rosenbaum and Nishioka hit back-to-back RBI doubles as the Sagehens took a 2-1 lead.
The Stags answered in the bottom of the third as MacKenzie Me singled to right field to score Jack White as the score went even at 2-2.
The Sagehens added two more in the top of the sixth with RBI's from sophomore Adam Hinthorne and Nishioka but the Stags answered with one of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 5-3 going into the seventh.
The game got blown open in the top of the eighth as the Sagehens posted seven runs in the inning. Simsiman started the scoring off with an RBI walk that brought home Rosenbaum. Sophomore Bryce Rogan followed that up driving in two runners with an RBI single to right field. Hulse drove in one more with a sacrifice fly and Hinthorne reached on an error that scored Rogan. Rosenbaum capped off the inning with a gap shot to left field that scored two more Sagehens as Pomona-Pitzer started off conference play with big statement win over CMS.
The Sagehens finish off their series with the Stags on Saturday, February 20th with a double header starting at 11 a.m. at Alumni Field.
