Claremont, Calif. - Senior James Campbell (Lookout Mountain, Tenn.) and junior Nick Gentili (Glendale, Calif.) each hit home runs as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team cruised past Caltech 16-1 to stay in the SCIAC title hunt heading into the final weekend.

With the win, Pomona-Pitzer improves to 23-12-1 overall and 17-9 in the SCIAC with two games left to play. First place La Verne came into the day at 18-7 in the SCIAC with a road game at CMS (which it led 13-4 in the late innings), and even if the Leopards win, the Sagehens will still be within two games with two left to play.
Campbell got the Pomona-Pitzer offense going with a two-run homer in the first inning, and then doubled in the third and came around to score on a groundout. After Caltech closed to within 3-1 with a run in the top of the fourth, freshman shortstop Sam Fox (New York, N.Y.) had an RBI double into the right field corner, center fielder Erik Munzer (Beverly Hills, Calif.) had an RBI single, Gentili ripped an RBI triple and Campbell had a sacrifice fly to make it 7-1.
Gentili then helped put the game away with a three-run homer in the fifth, and later in the inning, senior right fielder Ben Cohen (Camarillo, Calif.) cleared the bases with a three-run triple to make the score 13-1.
Campbell finished the day 2-for-2 with three RBI and three runs scored, while Gentili was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. Munzer was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI from his leadoff spot.
Stuart Gano (Lakewood, Wash.) got the win on the mound for the Sagehens, as he improves to 3-1 on the year, allowing no earned runs and striking out four in five innings of work.
Pomona-Pitzer will close out the regular season next weekend with a Friday home game against Redlands and a Saturday road game at CMS. If La Verne does defeat CMS this afternoon, he Sagehens will have to win both of those games, and hope that La Verne falls to Cal Lutheran and Whittier to pull even in the final regular season standings.
