Claremont, Calif. - Senior libero Heidi Leonard (Del Mar, Calif. - pictured) had 14 digs against Caltech, after tallying 30 against Chapman earlier in the day, to become Pomona-Pitzer's all-time leader in that category as the Sagehens cruised to a 3-0 win over Caltech.
In the first match, junior middle blocker Rachel Bollens (Seattle, Wash.) had 12 block assists, but Chapman rallied after losing the first set to defeat the Sagehens 3-1.
With the split, the Sagehens slip to 6-17 on the year and 4-7 in the SCIAC, while Chapman improves to 22-8 and Caltech slips to 0-19 and 0-11 in conference play. Set scores were 22-25, 25-18, 25-12 and 25-20 against Chapman, and 25-4, 25-10, 25-9 against Caltech.
Against Chapman, Pomona-Pitzer won the first set 25-22 on a kill from senior Jordan Hammond (Tulsa, Okla.) before the Panthers regrouped to win the next two sets 25-18 and 25-12.
Chapman appeared to be on its way to an easy win in the fourth set with a 19-11 lead, but the Sagehens scored five straight points, and a block from Bollens and Ellen Yamasaki (Salinas, Calif.) made it 20-18.
McKenna Roice combined on a block to make the score 22-18, and then had back-to-back kills to make it 24-19. Sophomore Sophie Tweed-Simmons (Beverly Hills, Calif.) smacked a hard kill to keep Pomona-Pitzer in it, but then hit the tape on a tip attempt as the set ended 25-20.
The Sagehens wasted little time taking control of the Caltech match, as they took the first set 25-4, then followed up with 25-10 and 25-9 wins for the easy sweep. Pomona-Pitzer had only three hitting errors as a team in the entire match. Tweed-Simmons had a team-high seven kills, while Carolyn Hite (Buffalo, N.Y.) added six in 12 attempts with no errors.
The Sagehens will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Redlands at 7:30 p.m.
