Sagehens Hang On To Defeat Whittier 10-9
Whittier, Calif. - Ally McLaughlin (sophomore) had three goals to help the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team build a 10-6 lead, and then added a last-minute ground ball to help seal it as the Sagehens held on for a 10-9 win at Whittier on Wednesday.
With the win, Pomona-Pitzer improves to 12-3 overall and 5-2 in the SCIAC, winning its fourth straight game and ninth in its last 10. Whittier slips to 5-7 overall and 0-7 in league play.
The Sagehens took a 4-3 lead into the half on McLaughlin's first goal of the day, but the Poets came out in the second half with three straight goals to take a 6-4 lead. Pomona-Pitzer regrouped and rattled off six unanswered goals, the last two coming from McLaughlin, to make the score 10-6 with 16:07 left.
Freshman Rebecca Long added two straight goals in the stretch, including the tying goal and the go-ahead goal to make it 7-6, while Kaitlin Jones and Sarah Markowitz also scored in the 6-0 run.
Pomona-Pitzer did not score again, though, as Whittier was able to chip away at the lead, pulling within 10-9 with 1:51 to go after three straight goals from Shaina Denny (who finished with seven of her team's nine goals). The Poets got the ball back with a minute to go, but after the ball came loose, McLaughlin was able to scoop up the ground ball and the Sagehens were able to kill the rest of the clock.
Gaby Fukumura had eight saves to get the win in goal for Pomona-Pitzer, while Nicole Yorba had 13 for Whittier.
The Sagehens return to action on Saturday with a home game against Chapman, beginning at 11 a.m.
