Markowitz, Christenson Lead Sagehens Past CMS

Claremont, Calif. - Sarah Markowitz (pictured) scored five goals and Hannah Christenson added four as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team pulled away in the first half and captured an 11-5 win over CMS on Saturday.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 11-3 overall on the season and 4-2 in the SCIAC. CMS slips to 9-4 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

Markowitz had four of her goals in the first half alone to stake Pomona-Pitzer to a 7-3 lead at the break, then added another one in the opening moments of the second half to make the score 8-3. She had her five goals on only six shot attempts, while Christenson scored on all four of her shots.

A Christenson goal off a feed from Aubrey Douglass made the score 9-3, before the Athenas were able to stop the 4-0 run with a goal from Christina Sutherland with 19:37 left. However, freshmen Rebecca Long and Christenson scored goals 43 seconds apart to push the lead to 11-4 and the Sagehens spent the rest of the game killing clock. CMS added one harmless goal in the final minute to make the score 11-5.

Gaby Fukumura had eight saves for the Sagehens to get the win in goal, while Douglass finished with three assists. Izzy Laterzo (two goals) was the only Athena with more than one tally.

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to face Whittier for a 7 p.m. contest.
