Sagehens Build Big Lead, Hold On To Defeat CMS
Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team jumped out to a 7-1 lead early and then held off a late surge to defeat CMS 11-9 on Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 2-0 on the young season, including 2-0 in the SCIAC. CMS slips to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Senior Jana London had four goals to lead the Sagehens, while freshman Rebecca Long (pictured) had her second straight hat trick with three goals to begin her collegiate career.
Pomona-Pitzer appeared like it might have an easy time of it early, as Long scored three minutes in, London followed with back to back goals, and freshman Olivia Cornfield scored on a free position shot to make the score 4-0. After CMS finally broke the ice, the Sagehens scored three more in a row, with Aubrey Douglass finding the net, followed by Long and London.
Christina Coffin, though, scored three times in a span of a minute, the last two while CMS was a player down following a yellow card to close the gap to 7-4 with 5:19 left in the first half. Long stopped the momentum with her third goal with 3:43 left and the score stayed 8-4 going into the break.
CMS kept chipping away and pulled within 10-8 with 4:01 left on a goal from Christina Sutherland, but the Sagehens won the ensuing draw control, and sophomore Ally McLaughlin fed fellow sophomore Emlyn Foxen for a key goal just 18 seconds later to make the score 11-8. Pomona-Pitzer was then able to kill most of the clock before the Athenas converted a harmless goal with 13 seconds left.
Gaby Fukumura had six saves to get the win for Pomona-Pitzer in goal, while London earned six draw controls to help the Sagehens to a 16-6 advantage in that category.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Occidental for a 12 noon contest.
