Sagehens Close Out Regular Season With 9-7 Win At Whittier

Whittier, Calif. - Freshman Sarah Markowitz (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) had four goals to lead the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team to a 9-7 win over Whittier on Saturday in the regular season finale.

With the win, the Sagehens move to 10-7 overall and the season and 5-5 in the SCIAC, setting up an opening round game against CMS on Wednesday, which will be played at 7 p.m. at Merritt Field. Whittier slips to 3-13 overall and 0-10 in the SCIAC with the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer had to work hard for the win, as Whittier jumped out to a 3-1 lead and took a 5-4 lead into halftime on a goal from Carolyn Mukai with nine seconds left in the second quarter.

However, the Sagehens regrouped at intermission and took quick control of the game. Sophomore Alexa Sarussi (Scottsdale, Ariz.) tied the score up 38 seconds into the second half with a free position goal, and Markowitz broke the tie with her third with 27:39 left to give the Sagehens the lead for good.

Junior Jana London (Chevy Chase, Md.) capped off the 3-0 run with a goal at the 19:17 mark to make the score 7-5. Whittier pulled back within a goal twice, but Markowitz answered with 14:50 left to make the score 8-6 and junior Logan Galansky (Denver, Colo.) fired in a goal with 5:51 left to stretch the lead to 9-7 and close out the scoring.

Pomona-Pitzer had a 26-17 edge in shots, but Whittier goalie Nicole Yorba was able to keep her team close with 13 saves. Senior Casey Leek (Bucharest, Romania) had six for the Sagehens.

The winner of the Pomona-Pitzer game against CMS on Wednesday will advance to the SCIAC semifinals against either top-seeded Redlands or second-seeded Occidental, which both receive opening round byes. Third-seeded Chapman meets sixth-seeded Whittier in the other opening round game on Wednesday.
